First Grade Teacher
This is my first year at Jack Hayes. I have been teaching in this district for over 20 years.
I have been teaching for 21 years in Ouachita Parish. I began in 1998 and have been in 4 schools in our wonderful school system. My most recent job was at Kiroli Elementary for the past 13 years. It was a great experience, but it was time for a change. I’m so excited to be a “Jack Hayes Brave” now, and look forward to helping these kids succeed.
I have taught first grade now for 14 years, and I love it. First grade is such a rewarding grade because there is so much to teach them. They come into your room barely able to hold a pencil correctly, and by the end of the year they are writing stories. Most know all of their letters and sounds when they walk through my door and can decode some simple words, but the major foundation of phonemic awareness, spelling, reading, and math lies in my hands. I love to see how much they can absorb and learn in one year. They are like tiny “sponges” just waiting to soak it all in with just a little positive teaching and encouragement. It is the most gratifying when they realize how much they have learned in first grade and are proud of themselves. First grade is awesome!
When I am not teaching, I am making jewelry. I started a jewelry business a year ago called “Auntie M Jewelry”, and it has become my passion outside of teaching.
